Fort Belvoir starts Military Appreciation Month with its J.M. Smucker Company Mission: Breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. May 2 at Pullen Field, 9637 Belvoir Road.

Belvoir received the grand-prize breakfast from the company for having the most creative product display using Smucker’s products at the commissary. A team from Smucker’s chose Belvoir’s display as the winner, out of commissary displays around the world. The team visited in September, during National Breakfast Month.

“The display was really bright and fun and had a lot of excitement,” said Heather Bartlebaugh, sales coordinator for Smucker’s, about the display, adding it was colorful and resonated with many of the judges.

The grand-prize, free breakfast is open to everyone and includes a buffet of Smucker’s food, including Pillsbury Biscuits, Jimmy Dean Sausage, juices and Folgers coffee, said Heather Bartlebaugh, a sales coordinator with the company.

The morning will also have live music from Spinphony, a string quartet that plays everything from classical music to Rihanna, she said. There will also be free and premium giveaway tents, bounce houses, caricature artists, and other activities.

“This event was won from our hearts. And, I say that because putting on a mini carnival for our ‘little future shoppers’ is a commitment toward the future that the commissary’s benefit will be serving our most deserving men and woman of the armed forces,” said Meralie Ervin.

Everything at the commissary is done for the militarySpinphony community, she said. Ervin was the assistant store director here when Belvoir found out they won the breakfast. She is now the director at Quantico’s commissary.

“It’s a really great family-friendly event that we’ve done for the past nine years,” Bartlebaugh said.

Part of the company culture is bringing families together, and it was a great opportunity for the military sales team to do that, Bartlebaugh said.

“It’s a great opportunity to step outside our day to day and spend some time serving meals to people who serve. We look forward to it every year,” she said.

Giving back to families is an amazing feeling, Ervin said. Winning the breakfast “solidifies the strong unity each of us carries within our community.”

“You can never be humbled enough to give back and say thank you for giving us our very own Fort Belvoir community experience,” Ervin said. “So come out and join us, not only to celebrate with us, but to be at our table for breakfast as part of the family.”
