Biography

Mr. Stephen W. Brooks assumed his current duties as Deputy Garrison Commander at United States Army Garrison Fort Belvoir on 3 August, 2009. His most recent previous assignment was as Deputy Garrison Commander at United States Army Garrison Walter Reed during 2006-2009.

Mr. Brooks is a retired United States Army Chemical Corps Colonel who served in a variety of command and staff positions over a span of almost 31 years. He commanded at platoon, detachment, company, battalion, and brigade levels to include the 9th Chemical Detachment (JA), Fort Stewart, Georgia; the 164th Chemical Company, Fort Lewis, Washington; the 545th Ordnance Company (Special Weapons), Federal Republic of Germany; Seneca Army Depot, Romulus, New York; and the United States Army Chemical Activity, Pacific at Johnson Island where he successfully completed the Army's ten year demilitarization campaign to destroy its Cold War chemical arsenal. He served in various staff positions at battalion, brigade, group, division, corps, major command, and Army levels. He has served in the 4th Infantry Division, 24th Infantry Division, 9th Infantry Division, and the 3d Armored Division. Prior to his retirement, he served on the faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University as Deputy Chair and Assistant Professor in the Economics Department. His military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Superior Unit Award, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

Mr. Brooks is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the University of Georgia in 1975. He is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College and holds a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California (1984), and a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy (1999) from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University.
