A new track is currently being constructed around North Post Field, courtesy of the Fort Belvoir Directorate of Public Works and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
According to Sheila Edwards, Fort Belvoir sports and fitness director, the project is one of several currently under way that upgrade Belvoir’s sports and recreation facilities.
“The North Post track is going to be a physical training track, one that follows the contour of the land and it’s being built in the grassy area around the main field,” Edwards said. “It will be a certified PT track as well.”
Edwards said DPW also plans some upgrades and repair work for Pullen Track on South Post.
“(DPW) is going to be resurfacing the main Pullen Track at the same time as the work on North Post is being done. Pullen Track is going to get graded to correct the drainage problem there, with all new asphalt, and it’s going to have a cushioned rubber surface on it.”
Edwards also said DPW expects the bulk of the work on both tracks to be completed in a relatively short period of time.
“DPW is supposed to finish the projects — as far as the asphalt paving—in three or four weeks. However, they won’t be able to put the rubber top layer down until the spring, in May (because of the temperature-sensitive materials used).
The upgrades to Pullen Track and North Post Field are among several improvement projects planned for the installation in the coming weeks.
“We have a couple of other projects on the books; the Body Shop is being renovated and Wells Field House is now 90 percent complete, with a new floor and upgraded locker rooms. We’re also doing some minor repairs to the basketball flooring at Graves Fitness Center, too,” Edwards said.
Edwards said these repairs and renovations are under way to better facilitate service to Fort Belvoir’s growing number of sports and fitness patrons.
“We’re just trying to improve the facilities for our customers, (a population) that’s ever expanding and changing.”
