On the Nov. 24, we celebrate Thanksgiving as a special time when we pause to reflect and give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy.
Thanksgiving also marks the beginning of the holiday season and a time when our military members, civilians, and their Families have an opportunity to rest and relax.
I encourage you to take this time to be with your Family and friends. Exercise caution in your travels as winter weather and heavy traffic may complicate your plans. Ensure that you rest and adequately prepare for your trip.
While the holidays are a time for celebration, they are also a time that brings particular hazards that can be unforgiving to the unprepared.
On Thanksgiving Day, the number of home cooking fires more than double according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
I ask each of you to think before you react on how to reduce the risk of your holiday activities. Take precautions in the home and as you travel. Be mindful of the increased risks associated with reduced daylight hours and decreasing temperatures which can lead to unnecessary losses. Make sure you are not just driving safely, but you are keeping an eye out for the travelers around you. Beware of other drivers who may try to multitask by texting or using cell phones while driving.
The goal is for everyone to enjoy the holiday without mishap or alcohol related offenses. Please help to make this a reality. As you celebrate Thanksgiving with your Family, friends and loved ones, please remember those who may be in harm’s way - separated from their Families, defending our country and freedom.
