Writing For Publication
Newspaper writing is actually very
simple -- it follows the five "w’s" and "h" formula. The
first paragraph, or lead, is the most important as it should include the five
"w’s" -- who, what, when, where and why of an event or activity --
and often the "h" -- how.
That’s the paragraph that tells the reader why the event is important and
pulls a reader into the remainder of the article.
The story should then flow from the lead with the most important information at
the beginning and the least important at the end.
Always ensure that there is a point
of contact in the article, with phone number, and that all people have both
first and last names, not just ranks and last names. |
