Command Sergeant Major Gabriel Berhane is from Los Angeles, California. He enlisted in the Army in March 1983. He received Basic and Advanced Individual Training under One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Kentucky and graduated as a 19D Cavalry Scout.

During his 26 years of service, CSM Berhane has served in every position in the Armor and Cavalry field from Dismounted Scout to Command Sergeant Major. CSM Berhane's assignments and positions include: Dismounted Scout, Driver, Gunner and Squad Leader in C Troop, 3d Squadron, 12th Cavalry, 3d Armored Division, Budingen, Germany; Track Commander and Section_ Sergeant in HHC, 4th Battalion, 64th Armor, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant with E and B Companies, 4th BN, 26th Infantry, 2d Training Brigade, Fort Dix, New Jersey; Platoon Sergeant in HHC, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany; Assistant Operations Sergeant in HHT, 2d Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 24th Infantry Division, later re-designated 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia; First Sergeant, C-Troop, 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia; Senior Military Science Instructor/Battalion Sergeant Major, Penn State University, State College, Pennsylvania; Student and Staff and Faculty, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas; Command Sergeant Major for 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia; Command Sergeant Major 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division. CSM Berhane is currently assigned as the Fort Belvoir Installation Command Sergeant Major.

CSM Berhane's military education includes: Warrior Leaders Course; Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course; Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course; Battle Staff Course; First Sergeant Course; Drill Sergeant School; Airborne School; United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 51) and the Command Sergeants Major Course. CSM Berhane has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management/Human Resources from Park University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Excelsior College.

His awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal (w/ā€Vā€ Device); Bronze Star Medal (w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster); Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal (w/6 Oak Leaf Clusters); Army Achievement Medal (w/6 Oak Leaf Clusters); Good Conduct Medal (8th Award); National Defense Medal (w/Bronze Star); Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Armed Forces Services Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/Numeral Four); Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Ribbon (w/Numeral Five); United Nations Medal; Presidential Unit Citation Medal; Joint Meritorious Unit Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal; Parachutist Badge; Drill Sergeant Badge and Combat Action Badge. CSM Berhane is a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and also a recipient of the Order of Saint George.
